  • Manages individual and corporate gifts as well as planned and annual giving campaigns.

Overall Duties and Areas of Oversight

As the Donor Relations/Development Specialist you are responsible for the development and implementation of strategic plans to raise funds for the organization cost-effectively and time-efficiently, as well as interact with our Donors and cultivate these relationships in meaningful ways. Duties include:

  • Oversee and manage fundraising efforts of Tara Mandala
  • Build strong and successful relationships with patrons and donors
  • Maintain communications with donors and patrons
  • Prepare Thank you acknowledgments for major gifts
  • Analyzing giving patterns and identifying trends
  • Develop communication strategies and plans for fundraising campaigns
  • Overseeing estate and legacy giving
  • Developing new donor and foundation relationships
  • Oversee the execution of fundraising plans, campaigns and events
  • Work closely with Executive Director and Spiritual Director regarding giving and donations
  • Generate reports and analysis of donor activity, new donor acquisition and campaign results and prepare these for the Executive Director and the Board of Directors as appropriate.
  • Cultivate new donor relationships with on-site retreatants
  • Conduct wealth analyses of key donors and perspective donors 
  • Execute three campaigns per year.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Develop and oversee our annual fundraising program and various campaigns
  • Identify prospective individual and family foundation donors and develop strategies to cultivate those relationships
  • Maintain ongoing communications with private and foundation donors
  • Ensure timely and accurate report deliveries to the Executive Director and Board of Directors
  • Prepare all fundraising materials, including ongoing campaigns such as the Ceiling Mandala project and the Tara Thankga campaign
  • Oversee staff on the management and planning of fundraising events and donor receptions
  • Develop and implement communication and marketing strategies with Communications Department
  • Oversee preparation of print and social media marketing collateral related to fundraising in collaboration with our Communications Department
  • Oversee donor thank you acknowledgements and gifts including annual Losar Gift Giving effort (February)
  • Lead and oversee onsite fundraising events during key events

Required Leadership Skills & Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Business Administration, Finance, Communications, Non-Profit Administration, Development or related field
  • Leadership skills, including the capacity to remain compassionate and equanimous under pressure, ability to adapt to and manage through uncertainty, ability to inspire and motivate others, as well as collaborate and build relationships effectively, including with stakeholders outside of Tara Mandala
  • Drive change and improvement through process innovation and integration
  • Excellent verbal communications skills, with knowledge of “compassionate” and “non-violent” communication skills is a plus
  • Must be able to work non-traditional hours including evenings, weekends and holidays to get the job done
  • 5+ years’ fundraising and development experience in a non-profit organization, including managing large operations support and capital campaigns
  • Foundation relationship and grant writing experience
  • Familiarity with Meditation, Buddhism and Buddhist practices or a strong interest
  • Proficiency in Salesforce or other comparable data management system
  • Familiarity wealth screening software is a plus
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google suite
  • Demonstrate organizational and analytical abilities
  • Excellent written and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to meet goals and deadlines
  • Communicate in a timely manner and use of email as the main communications platform

On-Site Work Environment: Our on-site office is an open concept shared office space. Ideal applicant can work in this open style shared space with conscientiousness towards speaking softly, using headsets for meetings, and working around others’ use of the space for meetings. 

On-Site Physical Demands: May be required to lift up to 40 pounds.

Compensation, Benefits and Other Job Requirements

  • This is a full-time, off-site contractor position or an onsite employee position depending on the individual’s interest in living and working at a Buddhist Retreat Center
  • Attendance at one 5-day retreat per year
  • Free access to all Tara Mandala online programs
  • On-site positions include room and board, based on housing availability
