Play of Words: The Practice of Right Speech (online)

With Dorje Lopön Charlotte Rotterdam

February 10, 2024

Remember the children’s verse: “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me…”? Upon further reflection, the sting of words may last far longer than a broken bone.

In his very first teachings on the Four Noble Truths, the Buddha discussed Right Speech as one of the eight key elements of the spiritual path.

In Tantric Buddhism, the power of sacred speech is practiced through mantra – sounds that emanate wisdom, clarity, and healing.

In our contemporary lives, speech takes the form of spoken words, text messages, social media. Our words can cultivate connection and creativity, but when used unskillfully, can be harmful.

In this day-long contemplative retreat, we will draw on traditional teachings and practices to explore our relationship to speech. Together, we will examine:

  • How can we bring mindfulness and clarity to our words?
  • How can we evoke the power of sound to speak compassion and wholeness into reality?
  • How might we play with words – and silence – as a form of spiritual practice?

We invite you to come and explore with Dorje Lopön Charlotte the practical ways in which Buddhist teachings can help us cultivate Right Speech.
