Course Two of the five-course series, The Heart of Buddhism: A Year of Study and Practice.

The Buddhist Path
The Buddhist path offers profound guidance for working with the individual and collective challenges we face — and transforming suffering into liberation. These teachings show us how we can each become a light in the darkness, embodying the luminous spaciousness that is the heart-essence of who we are.

Learn the core teachings of Buddhism, and consider how the Buddha’s insights into suffering and liberation speak directly to our modern experience. Together, we’ll delve into the essence of the Eightfold Path: the Buddha’s step-by-step instructions for liberating ourselves from suffering. Students will explore the meaning of “taking refuge” in the Three Jewels and have the option to formally enter the Buddhist path by taking the Refuge Vow.

What You’ll Experience in What the Buddha Taught

  • Learn how the Four Noble Truths address contemporary suffering
  • Discover the Eightfold Path as an ethical framework for everyday life
  • Explore the principles of karma and interdependence
  • Experience how meditation reveals innate wisdom
  • Optional: Take or renew the Refuge Vow to formally embark upon the Buddhist path (must have completed Heart of Buddhism I & II, or Sutrayana equivalent)

The Learning Journey

  • Live sessions Fridays from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm MDT/MST
  • Engage with a global practice community in weekly discussion forums
  • Flexible learning environment; participate live or study at your own pace
  • Examinations are offered upon course completion
